HISTORY Dale Grant, founder of D. Grant Ltd., started in the shoe business in 1959 as a salesman for Florsheim Shoes in Downtown Salt Lake City. He excelled as a salesperson and was soon given the assistant job by the store's owner.
He was soon approached by the Adler Sock Company (later a division of Burlington Industries) for a position as sales representative for the intermountain states (Canada to Mexico), where he became the number one sock salesman in the company and later the Regional Sales Manager for the western states. In 1970, he became a clothing broker representing multiple lines out of New York City, including, Pierre Cardin, Jean Claude Kili, Dunlee Slack Ltd., Eagle Shirtmakers, and many others. In 1975, the Pearson family, who owned the Hilton Hotel (now the Sheraton) in downtown Salt Lake, approached Dale. They wanted a high-end clothing store for men and women, and offered Dale an excellent opportunity to go into business for himself. The Lady and The Gentry opened to great success and satisfaction in November of that year. He sold that location 12 years later. Then in 1988, Dale opened the first D. Grant Ltd. store on the east bench in Foothill Village. He loved the location, the demographics of the area and especially the opportunity to expand his retail operation. Initially he offered both men and women's clothing and accessories, but he decided to specialize and soon the store became exclusively a fine, high-end men's store. In November 2001, D. Grant Ltd. opened in the new Gateway development. Dale and his son Sky (who grew up in the business) bought fine cherry wood fixtures, custom designed the space, added new lines and expanded the inventory. They brought to the Utah market the finest designers and clothing manufactures in the business and are located exclusively at the new upscale Gateway Shopping Center downtown. After the initial year, business at the Gateway increased significantly. Sky bought into the business as a principal & partner with his father in January of 2006. D. Grant Ltd. has set the bar for higher end clothing with clients from all over the country. Dale, Sky and staff can be found on a daily basis helping their customers and friends with the Best of the Best in finer men's clothing, sportswear, shoes and accessories. |
